0030301 The Temptation of JesusMatthew 4:1-11, Mark 1:12-13, Luke 4:1-13, A.D. 26 Judean Desert in Judea

Then Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan and immediately was led up into the wilderness forty days by the Spirit.  And the Spirit drove Him out into the wilderness, and He was in the wilderness to be tempted by the devil.  He was being tempted by the devil, Satan.  And He ate nothing in those days, and when they had ended, having fasted forty days and forty nights, afterward, He was hungry.

And the one tempting him, the devil, came and he said to Him, “If you are the Son of God, speak to this stone that it should become bread, and speak that these stones might become loaves of bread.”  But Jesus answered him and He said, “It has been written, ‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes out of the mouth of God.’”

Then the devil took him and led him to the holy city, Jerusalem; and set him upon the pinnacle of the temple.  And he said to him, “If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down from here, for it has been written, ‘To his angels, He will give orders concerning you to guard you;’ and, ‘In their hands they will bear you up so that you do not ever strike your foot against a stone.’”  And answering Jesus said to him, “Again, it has been said, and it has been written, ‘You shall not test the Lord your God.’”

Again, the devil took Him, and having led him up to a very high mountain, the devil showed to Him all the kingdoms of the world and their glory in a moment of time.  And the devil said to him, “To you I will give the authority of all this and its glory, for it has been delivered to me, and to whomever I wish, I will give it.  All these things I will give to you if, falling down, you will worship before me; it will all be yours.”  Then Jesus said to him, “You get away Satan!  For it has been written, ‘The Lord your God!  You shall worship and you shall serve Him alone and Him only shall you serve.’”  And having finished every temptation, then the devil left Him and departed from him until an opportune time.  And it happened that angels came and were ministering to Him and serving Him.  And He was with the wild animals.
